The Flowering Tree premieres Oct. 8th at 7:30PM!
The Flowering Tree
On Saturday, October 8, 2011, Natya Dance Theatre will present the world premiere of “The Flowering Tree,” a modern interpretation of the classical Indian folktale about the relationship between human and nature. This performance will be held at the Harris Theater Millennium Park in Chicago at 7:30 p.m.
“The Flowering Tree” is the story of Kumudha and her sisters, who are shunned by their village for too poor. The gods send the girls a special mantra that turns Kumudha into a tree that gives the most fragrant and beautiful flowers on earth. As long as the sisters collect only the flowers that fell naturally from the tree, they could sell the blooms at the market. And until the people around her treat Kumudha’s tree form with the reverence nature deserves, she would be not be returned to her human form. Can the villagers respect the blossoms of this flowering tree while reaping her rewards? Can the delicate balance between nature and human society be restored?
This message of conservation and the preservation of nature unfolds through a spectacular combination of Bharatanatyam, classical Indian music, Jazz music, acting, and storytelling. Rich in costume, color, and sound, “The Flowering Tree” is a performance for all generations, together.
