Natya Presents:
Lecture and Demonstration – Rajika Puri on the Ballet La Bayadere
11:00 am - 1:00 pm
Choreographed by the great Marius Petipa in 1877, La Bayadere represents a European fascination with Indian temple dancers that dates back to Marco Polo, and reached its height in the mid-19th C with the visit of real devadasis. Join us for a special lecture/demonstration by Rajika Puri–acclaimed Bharatanatyam and Odissi dancer and scholar. Through video and photography, Ms. Puri–who was recently invited to consult on the Berlin reconstruction of La Bayadere due to her knowledge in Indian mime—will examine the portrayal of the Indian temple dancer in Western travel tales.
FREE and open to the public. Limited seating. RSVP required.
