The Flowering Tree
This evening-length concert tells the story of Kumudha and her sisters, who are shunned by their village for being too poor. The gods send the girls a special mantra which Kumudha uses to transform into a tree with the most beautiful fragrant flowers on earth. The sisters must only sell what flowers fall naturally to the ground. Sadly, the secret is discovered and Kumudha’s transformation is taken advantage of by others. A message of conservation and preservation of nature is subtext to this work, which unfolds through a spectacular combination of bharatanatyam dance, storytelling, and Indian carnatic and jazz music.
